Iwobi Reacts to Troost-Ekong’s Shock International Retirement

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed his sadness following William Troost-Ekong’s decision to retire from international football.

Troost-Ekong announced his retirement on Thursday, ending a decade-long spell with the national team. The 32-year-old was initially expected to lead Nigeria to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking to newsmen, Iwobi said the defender’s exit would be felt deeply within the squad.

“It’s obviously a sad one for us because he’s a big part of our team,”
“At the end of the day I wish him well, he’s a brother; he has helped Nigeria, he has helped me. I hope the next chapter of his life goes well, and we’ll all support him.”

Troost-Ekong made 83 appearances for the Super Eagles over 10 years and was instrumental at several major tournaments, including winning Player of the Tournament at the 2023 AFCON.
