IWD 2026: NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, Calls for Greater Investment in Women

As the world marks the 2026 International Women’s Day, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists FCT Council, Grace Ike, celebrates the strength, resilience, and limitless potential of women.

Speaking on the 2026 theme, “Give To Gain”, Ike says investing in women through education, mentorship, opportunities, and resources doesn’t just empower individuals, it strengthens families, communities, institutions, and the nation.

For Ike, the theme has a personal meaning. As the first female Chairman of NUJ FCT, she acknowledges the courage of women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes, and refused to accept limits on their dreams.

“When women are empowered, the benefits ripple far beyond the individual. Newsrooms become more inclusive, storytelling becomes richer, governance becomes more responsive, and society becomes more just”, she said.

Ike praised female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience, professionalism, and commitment to truth and public service. She highlighted the importance of mentoring young journalists, creating safe and supportive workplaces, and ensuring women’s voices are heard in leadership positions.

“The United Nations theme, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls’, reminds us that achieving equality is a collective responsibility. Governments, institutions, media organisations, and communities must work together to remove barriers that hinder women’s progress.

“When women rise, journalism rises, communities thrive, and our nation grows stronger. Happy International Women’s Day. When we give to women, we truly gain as a society”, Ike added.

She concluded by urging society to give women more opportunities, mentorship and recognition.
