“I’ve Never Been Heartbroken” — Simi Opens Up About Love, Boundaries, and Emotional Self-Preservation

Nigerian singer-songwriter Simi has shared rare insights into her emotional resilience and relationship philosophy, revealing how she managed to avoid heartbreak before marrying fellow artist Adekunle Gold.
In a candid conversation with media personality VJ Adams, the Duduke crooner admitted that while she’s felt emotional pain in the past, she has never experienced what she would call true heartbreak.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been heartbroken, but I’ve been hurt before,” Simi said. “I don’t have any memory of being heartbroken, but I’ve probably broken someone’s heart though.”
She explained that her approach to relationships has always been rooted in self-awareness and self-protection. Rather than staying in situations that don’t serve her, she chooses to walk away before they reach a breaking point.
“I’m the kind of person who never wanted to be dated out of pity or guilt. If it’s not working, I’d rather feel bad and move on. That’s how I’ve always operated,” she said.
Simi added that this mindset extends beyond romantic relationships into friendships and other personal connections.
“This isn’t just about dating. If I have friends who make me feel unsafe, I’ll cut it off. I have anxiety, so I protect my peace. Anyone can hurt you, even people you love—but I’d rather remove myself than wait to be broken.”
By prioritizing emotional safety and clarity, Simi believes she’s been able to avoid the kind of deep heartbreak many experience.
“There’s always a risk of being hurt when you love people. But I’ve trained myself to walk away when something feels wrong. That’s probably why I’ve never had my heart broken.”
