ISWAP Strikes Yobe Military Base After Regional Security Talks

Terrorists belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a midnight assault on Buni Gari, a town in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of Friday.

The attack came just two days after the North East Governors’ Forum convened in Damaturu to address regional security, poverty, and infrastructure challenges.

Security sources confirmed that the insurgents targeted part of the 27 Brigade Tactical Headquarters located in Buni Gari, which lies less than seven kilometers from Buni Yadi—the site of the Nigerian Army Special Forces School.

According to local residents, the attackers stormed the town shortly after midnight, firing sporadically before setting fire to military installations and civilian properties.

Troops from Operation HADIN KAI responded swiftly, engaging the militants in a fierce gun battle. The Nigerian Army acknowledged the incident in a brief statement posted on its official social media handles on Saturday, stating:

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI are currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attackers at Buni Gari, Yobe State.”

An intelligence source said the terrorists were met with strong resistance from a combined force of soldiers, local hunters, and vigilantes. The firefight reportedly lasted over an hour before the insurgents were eventually repelled.

The full extent of damage or casualties from the attack was yet to be confirmed at the time of reporting.
