IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-at-Home to Honour Biafra Heroes

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a region-wide lockdown across the Southeast on May 30, 2025, to honour the sacrifices of Biafra’s heroes and heroines.

This declaration was made by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, who emphasized the significance of the day as a time to remember those who gave their lives for the Biafran cause.

In an official statement, Powerful stated, “May 30, 2025, has been designated as a public holiday and a day of lockdown throughout Biafraland, in honour of the heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.” He further added that the day would serve as an annual memorial for those who fought for Biafra’s independence.

Leading up to the commemoration, IPOB has already begun awareness campaigns, with broadcasts from Radio Biafra and media efforts across the region.

Powerful also noted that IPOB would organize memorial lectures to honour Biafran heroes, both in Nigeria and abroad, culminating in the peak event on May 30, known as Biafra Heroes Memorial Day.

IPOB has called on all Biafrans to stay indoors on the designated day. “We urge all Biafrans to remain indoors and refrain from any outdoor activities on May 30, 2025. This is for your safety, as the Nigerian Police and Military are expected to be on the streets, and there are concerns about unnecessary violence against innocent Biafrans,” the statement read.

The group also instructed transporters to cease operations on May 30, urging people to avoid the streets altogether.

IPOB further warned that anyone who disobeys the lockdown order should bear full responsibility for any consequences, stressing that the wellbeing of the Biafran people remains a top priority.

This annual event continues to highlight the ongoing struggle for Biafran liberation and the memory of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of independence.
