Insecurity: Senate Drafting Law on State Police, Says Bamidele

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has revealed that the National Assembly is in the process of drafting legislation to establish state police forces across Nigeria. This move aims to address the escalating security challenges and to enhance localized law enforcement.

Bamidele emphasized the necessity of a legal framework that ensures accountability and prevents potential abuses of power by state governors. He noted that the proposed law would delineate clear operational guidelines and oversight mechanisms for state police units.

The initiative has garnered mixed reactions from various stakeholders. While some advocate for decentralized policing as a means to improve security, others caution against the risks of politicization and human rights violations.

Human rights organizations have called for comprehensive consultations to ensure that the legislation aligns with democratic principles and safeguards citizens’ rights. They stress the importance of community involvement in the planning and implementation phases.

The Senate has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and inclusivity in the legislative process. Public hearings and stakeholder engagements are planned to gather diverse perspectives and to refine the bill accordingly.
