INEC Rejects Pressure Over 2027 Party Registration, Stresses Legal Compliance

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fired back at a coalition of political groups seeking to register a new party ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that no amount of public pressure or intimidation can override the constitutional and regulatory requirements governing party registration.

In a firm statement, INEC questioned the coalition’s compliance with crucial legal and procedural mandates, underscoring that registering a political party is a rigorous constitutional process—not merely a political announcement.

The commission also refuted recent online reports alleging the registration of two new parties—the “Independent Democrats” and the “Peoples Democratic Movement”—clarifying that such claims are inaccurate.
