INEC Records Over 1.3 Million Online Voter Registrations in First Week

Majority of new registrants are young Nigerians, as physical registration begins nationwide.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says more than 1.37 million Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for voter cards within the first week of its nationwide exercise.

According to data released by the Commission, as of yesterday, a total of 1,379,342 people had signed up. Women accounted for slightly more than half of the figure at 717,856 (52.04%), while men made up 661,846 (47.96%).

Young Nigerians dominated the process, with 860,286 registrants (62.37%) aged between 18 and 34. Students formed the largest occupational group with 374,534 (27.15%) applications, while 27,089 persons with disabilities (1.96%) were also captured.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the data would be updated weekly and made publicly available through the Commission’s website and official platforms.

Meanwhile, physical registration has now commenced across INEC’s 811 state and local government offices, giving citizens the choice to register in person or complete their online applications at designated centres.

The Commission reminded Nigerians that the exercise is only open to citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered. It also warned against double or multiple registrations, noting that such acts are against the law.

However, INEC clarified that voters can still transfer their registration between states or within the Federal Capital Territory and request replacements for lost or damaged voter cards.

The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will run for one year and is scheduled to close on 30 August 2026.
