INEC Denies Releasing 2027 Election Timetable, Warns Against Fake Reports

Commission says any schedule circulating online did not originate from INEC and violates the Electoral Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by Prof. Joash Amupitan, Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the Commission made it clear that no such timetable has been announced.

“INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.

INEC Cites Electoral Act

The Commission stressed that it operates strictly within the law, referencing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates INEC to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.

According to INEC, any timetable or schedule released outside this legally defined period cannot emanate from the Commission.

Official Timetable Will Be Released in Due Course

INEC assured Nigerians that the authentic timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls will be made public at the appropriate time, in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.

The Commission added that once released, the information will be disseminated exclusively through INEC’s official and verified communication channels.

INEC also urged members of the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and rely only on official INEC platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.

Commitment to Credible 2027 Elections

In his New Year message on Friday, Amupitan reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027.

He said preparations are already underway to further strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system, describing the new year as a period of renewal and institutional consolidation ahead of the next general elections.

Reflecting on INEC’s activities in 2025, the Chairman commended staff for their dedication and professionalism, citing the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office on October 23.

According to him, the exercise demonstrated that with discipline, unity, and professionalism, INEC remains capable of safeguarding the integrity of elections and reinforcing public confidence in the democratic process.
