In a resolute stance on safeguarding human rights, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a strong reminder to all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) about the critical importance of adhering to legally defined detention periods.
This comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the integrity and human rights framework within the force.
In a statement released on Sunday, the IGP underscored that any officer involved in the unlawful or extended detention of individuals beyond the constitutionally mandated period will face strict consequences.
He referenced Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee every citizen the right to personal liberty and dignity. Egbetokun emphasized that any violation of these fundamental rights would not be tolerated, stressing that the police must always operate within the bounds of the law.
“Prolonged or unlawful detention not only erodes public trust but can also damage the image of the police as a service built on integrity,” the IGP stated. He reiterated that fostering a culture of accountability within the force is paramount, urging all officers to conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism when engaging with the public.
The IGP’s commitment to human rights aligns with a broader vision for a police force that is not only effective in enforcing law and order but also deeply committed to protecting the rights and dignity of every individual.
The Nigeria Police Force aims to strengthen relationships with the communities it serves by ensuring that those in custody are treated with the highest respect and in accordance with the law.
This renewed commitment to human rights is part of an ongoing initiative to rebuild and reinforce public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, creating a foundation of trust and respect in policing across the nation.
