IGP Egbetokun Seeks Stronger UK Partnership to Tackle Transnational Crime

IGP Egbetokun seeks deeper UK partnership, proposes fellowship exchange to combat cross-border crimes.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to global and inter-agency collaboration in addressing the rising threat of transnational crime.

Egbetokun made this known during a visit by the UK Minister of State for Home Affairs, Lord David Hanson, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the IGP noted that the partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom remains vital in strengthening law enforcement operations, especially in the area of cybercrime.

Lord Hanson, in his remarks, acknowledged the increasing concern over transnational crimes like fraud and cyber-related offences, stressing the need for deeper collaboration. He expressed the UK government’s readiness to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Police Force to bolster cooperation and improve operational capacity.

The UK minister also praised existing joint efforts to curb cybercrime and said he looked forward to expanded partnerships going forward.

IGP Egbetokun, in response, proposed a fellowship exchange programme between the Nigeria Police and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), aimed at fostering professional development and sharing of best practices.

He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s readiness to collaborate with international partners to enhance security and reduce crime across borders.
