ICPC Pushes for Greater Accountability in Local Government Administration

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called for stronger anti-corruption measures at the local government level, describing it as crucial to national development.

Speaking at a strategic engagement on “Accountability and Corruption Prevention in Local Government Administration” the chairman of the commission, Musa Aliyu, on Wednesday stressed that local governments must lead in transparency and grassroots service delivery.

Participants included members of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition and civil society groups, who deliberated on ways to enhance financial transparency, internal controls, and citizen oversight.

Adamu identified issues such as fund diversion, ghost workers, inflated contracts, and misuse of revenue as major concerns. It emphasized its broader strategy beyond enforcement, including public education, system reviews, and ethical advocacy.

He highlighted recent efforts such as its partnership with the Centre for Fiscal and Public Integrity, participation in the Gombe State Local Governments’ Summit, and the launch of a national Manual of Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments (ACPPLG) with the Nigerian Bar Association.

The Commission therefore urged stakeholders to sustain the anti-corruption fight through partnership, capacity-building, and a shared commitment to integrity at all levels.
