I Work Five Times Harder Than My Peers as a Blind Musician – Cobhams Asuquo

Renowned Nigerian singer and music producer, Cobhams Asuquo, has opened up about the challenges and resilience that define his journey as a blind artist in the entertainment industry.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, the One Hit crooner spoke candidly about his experience living with blindness, revealing that he often has to work “five times harder” than his peers to overcome the stereotypes associated with disability.

“My awareness of being blind pushes me to outwork others,” Cobhams said. “There’s a stereotype that blind people are incapable, and I strive daily to challenge that narrative. I want to prove that I can do so much more.”

Encouraging others living with disabilities, he emphasized the importance of embracing one’s reality instead of hiding behind euphemisms. “It’s okay to be blind. I don’t shy away from calling it what it is. I’m not visually impaired — I’m completely blind, and I’m perfectly fine with that. It doesn’t define my limits; it strengthens my drive.”

He also reflected on the value of self-acceptance and humor in his journey: “There’s even some dark humor around it sometimes, and I’m totally good with that. This is who I am. And the fact that I’ve lived this life, achieved so much, and touched lives in the process — that’s what makes it special.”

Cobhams’ message is one of empowerment, urging people to own their truth and draw strength from their uniqueness rather than be held back by it.
