Unidentified gunmen have abducted Augustine Madubiya, a 400-level student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), in the early hours of Tuesday. The attack also led to the tragic death of a local resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was shot while responding to the disturbance.
The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. at Istijaba Villa, an off-campus hostel in Unguwar Jeji. Eyewitnesses reported that five armed men approached students who were sleeping outside their rooms due to the hot weather and demanded money. When the students explained they had no money, the attackers proceeded to assault them.
During the commotion, Hussaini, who was tending to his cattle nearby, tried to intervene but was shot dead by the gunmen. Augustine Madubiya, a final-year Economics student, was abducted by the assailants, while another student, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, managed to escape.
In response to the attack, the Vice Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene with the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo Division and officials from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kalgo. He addressed the students, assuring them of the university’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.
The Vice Chancellor has also informed Kebbi State Governor, His Excellency Nasir Idris, about the incident through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services at the Cabinet Office.
The university expressed its appreciation to the District Head of Unguwar Jeji and the local community for their support during this difficult time.
Additionally, FUBK has called for continued assistance from the state government, the Nigeria Police, and other security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted student and prevent similar incidents in the future.
