In a groundbreaking move that reshapes the narrative of military leadership in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ms. Grace Morenike Henry as the new Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, the first woman and first non-commissioned officer ever to assume the post. Her appointment takes effect from June 7, 2025.
Announced in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, this milestone stands out not only for its historical significance but also for its bold challenge to the traditionally male-dominated and hierarchically rigid structure of Nigeria’s military veteran institutions.
While many news outlets have briefly reported on the appointment, few have emphasized the magnitude of this shift: Ms. Henry’s rise defies entrenched norms within military circles, where top positions have long been reserved for retired commissioned officers — typically male and of higher rank.
In contrast, her elevation from a retired non-commissioned officer to the apex of the Nigerian Legion signals a powerful message about inclusivity, merit, and modernization.
Born on October 5, 1964, Ms. Henry brings to the role over 25 years of military and administrative expertise. Since her retirement from the Nigerian Army in 2000, she has served with distinction, most recently as Director of Corporate Affairs at the Legion Headquarters in Abuja.
She also serves as the National Coordinator of Female Military Veterans of Nigeria, a role in which she has been a relentless advocate for the often-overlooked contributions of women in uniform.
She succeeds Retired Major General AbdulMalik Jibrin, and her appointment is widely regarded as a landmark for gender equity and a long-overdue recognition of the service and sacrifices of all ranks within the armed forces.
President Tinubu, in his endorsement, expressed confidence in Ms. Henry’s ability to “reposition the Nigerian Legion and champion the welfare of ex-servicemen and women across the country.” Her leadership is expected to usher in a new era of reform, representation, and revitalization for Nigeria’s foremost veterans’ organization.
As the nation reflects on this historic appointment, Ms. Grace Henry stands not only as a symbol of change but as a testament to the expanding space for women and non-traditional voices in the corridors of power.
