Governor Okpebholo Charts New Course with ₦75,000 Minimum Wage in Edo State

In a bold and unprecedented move that places Edo State at the forefront of labour-friendly governance in Nigeria, Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for all state workers.

The announcement came during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where the governor addressed thousands of jubilant workers and labour union representatives.

“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of Seventy-Five Thousand Naira (₦75,000). This is not just a policy decision—it is a statement of gratitude and a commitment to shared prosperity,” Governor Okpebholo declared to thunderous applause.

He further emphasized: “We believe this adjustment will significantly ease the burden on Edo workers amid rising living costs. In return, we count on your renewed dedication as partners in building a greater, more prosperous Edo.”

At a time when many states are still grappling with implementing the former ₦30,000 benchmark—and while the Federal Government continues consultations on a new national minimum wage—Edo’s move has stunned many observers. Unlike other state announcements that often come with vague timelines or conditional rollouts, Governor Okpebholo’s declaration was clear, immediate, and without ambiguity.

By comparison, some major national outlets have reported on wage talks with cautious optimism, focusing on the complexity of federal negotiations. But Edo’s leadership has taken a decisive step that may now set the standard for subnational governments.

Labour leaders in attendance hailed the governor’s gesture as historic and urged other states to follow suit.

With this move, Governor Okpebholo has not only won the admiration of Edo’s workforce but has positioned the state as a national model for progressive labour relations.
