Governor Abiodun Mourns Kano Athletes Killed in Tragic Road Crash

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed profound grief over the tragic accident that claimed the lives of members of the Kano State contingent returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival, held in Ogun State.

The fatal incident occurred approximately 50 kilometres from Kano, shortly after the team passed through Kaduna State. According to reports, a bus carrying the athletes crashed at Dakatsalle Bridge in the Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, resulting in the death of 20 athletes from the Kano delegation.

In a statement issued from Abeokuta on Saturday, Governor Abiodun said the incident had left him deeply traumatised, describing the deceased as vibrant young Nigerians with bright futures ahead of them. He noted that the athletes had proudly represented Kano State at the recently concluded Gateway 2024 Games and were on their way home to warm welcomes from their families and fans.

“This is indeed saddening and distressing,” Abiodun said. “That 20 gallant athletes who represented Kano State at the just concluded Gateway 2024 Games have lost their lives in the most traumatizing and painful circumstances is beyond heartbreaking.”

He continued, “These were young people, budding stars with so much potential—talent, skills, and creativity to offer Nigeria. It is even more tragic that their families, who were eagerly awaiting their return, will never see them again.”

Governor Abiodun extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, particularly Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, members of his cabinet, and the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Bala Fagge. He described the deceased athletes as heroes whose patriotism and service to both Kano State and Nigeria would not be forgotten.

He concluded with a prayer: “We are deeply saddened by this incident, and we pray that Almighty Allah grant them eternal rest. May we never again witness such a devastating tragedy.”
