In a significant political development, opposition parties in Gombe State have formed a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration ahead of upcoming elections.
The coalition, which includes key figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other smaller parties, was officially unveiled during a joint press conference held in Gombe on Friday.
Spokespersons for the coalition said the alliance was formed in response to what they described as “widespread discontent with the APC government’s performance in the state,” citing issues ranging from poor infrastructure and rising poverty to insecurity and lack of transparency.
“The people of Gombe deserve accountable leadership, economic opportunity, and real development—not propaganda and failed promises,” said a PDP representative at the event.
The opposition leaders pledged to work together to present consensus candidates and coordinate efforts across all levels—from local councils to the gubernatorial race—aiming to unseat the APC in the next election cycle.
The coalition also stated its intention to embark on a grassroots mobilisation campaign, targeting youths, women, and rural communities with what they called a “message of hope and renewal.”
Observers say this opposition unity could pose a serious challenge to the APC in Gombe, a state the party has controlled since 2015. However, the effectiveness of the alliance may depend on its ability to remain cohesive and avoid internal divisions.
The APC is yet to respond officially to the formation of the coalition.
The Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Auwal Barde, and the Labour Party (LP), Benjamin Abner, also pledged their support for the alliance, affirming their commitment to working in unity for the future of Gombe State.
