Germany, Nextier strengthen ties on security, development cooperation

Germany and the Nigerian public policy think tank, Nextier, recently explored the evolving dynamics of German-Nigerian cooperation, with a focus on economic growth, security, climate resilience, and investment opportunities.

This discussion was featured in the latest episode of Nextier’s Crossing Perspectives podcast, where Ndu Nwokolo, Managing Partner at Nextier, engaged in conversation with Ambassador Johannes Lehne, the Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nigeria.

Lehne highlighted Germany’s long-standing partnership with Nigeria and acknowledged the country’s improving economic climate, which he attributed to reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu. “Inflation is decreasing, foreign exchange reserves are stabilizing, and oil production is picking up,” he noted.

He pointed out that German businesses are showing greater interest in Nigeria, a reflection of growing confidence in the country’s business environment.

The Ambassador also mentioned that Germany’s approach to development aid in Nigeria is evolving. “We will focus more on investment and business promotion rather than just crisis management,” he explained, further reaffirming Germany’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s defense sector.

Lehne revealed that Germany has already implemented a military support program with the Nigerian Armed Forces and plans to increase this assistance. He also discussed Germany’s role in strengthening ECOWAS’ counterterrorism capabilities, citing contributions such as mobile headquarters, hospitals, and logistics infrastructure.

Addressing concerns about potential budget cuts in areas like climate resilience, food security, and gender-related initiatives, Lehne reassured that funding for these sectors remains secure.

Germany, he emphasized, will continue its active development cooperation through GIZ, focusing on energy, agriculture, and job creation. This includes expanding the African Power Program to enhance regional electricity integration.
