French Climber Dies on Kanchenjunga, World’s Third-Highest Mountain

A 63-year-old French climber, Margareta Morin, tragically died while attempting to summit Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, on May 10, 2025.

Morin collapsed at an altitude of 7,800 meters during her ascent and could not be rescued due to adverse weather conditions. This was her first attempt at climbing an 8,000-meter peak.

In the same expedition, British climber Adrian Michael Hayes suffered severe altitude sickness during his descent from the summit.

He was brought down to Camp IV by Sherpas, and plans are underway to evacuate him once weather conditions improve.

The expedition, organized by Peak 15 Adventure, included climbers from various countries and marked the first successful summit of Kanchenjunga for the season.

Efforts are ongoing to recover Morin’s body, with coordination between the expedition team, her family, and the French Embassy in Kathmandu.

These incidents highlight the extreme challenges and risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering, particularly on peaks like Kanchenjunga, known for its technical difficulty and remote location.
