Fraud Allegations Land VeryDarkMan in EFCC Custody as Agency Dismisses Bias Talk

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), in connection with multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.

In a statement issued on Tuesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the EFCC said Otse repeatedly ignored formal invitations to respond to serious allegations of financial malfeasance, prompting his eventual detention.

“In line with its statutory mandate to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes, the EFCC invited Mr. Otse following credible petitions concerning alleged financial infractions,” the agency stated. “Despite several notices sent to his known addresses and communication platforms, he failed to honour the summons.”

The Commission was quick to dispel speculation that Otse’s arrest was politically motivated or linked to his sharp online criticisms of the EFCC and its leadership.

“Let it be clear that his detention has nothing to do with his social media activism. The Commission’s actions are guided solely by law and evidence. A valid remand order was obtained in accordance with due process,” the statement read.

EFCC also disclosed that Otse had been granted administrative bail and would be released upon meeting the necessary conditions. The Commission assured that criminal charges would be filed once the ongoing investigations are concluded.

While acknowledging the surge of public attention surrounding Otse’s case, the EFCC cautioned against misinformation and urged Nigerians to allow the legal process to run its course.

“The EFCC welcomes public scrutiny but urges citizens not to misinterpret its motives. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law,” the agency added.

Otse’s arrest has ignited debate across social media platforms, with advocates demanding his release and others calling for transparency in the investigation. The EFCC, however, insists that it is acting strictly within legal parameters.
