First Lady inaugurates 100-bed mother and child centre in Imo

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially inaugurated a 100-bed Mother and Child Centre at Awo-Omamma General Hospital, located near Owerri, the capital of Imo State. The facility, constructed and equipped by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), was opened on her behalf by Hajia Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice President.

According to a statement from Desmond Utomwen, the Special Assistant on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication at OSSAP-SDGs, the First Lady referred to the centre as “a symbol of Renewed Hope” and an essential step toward achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

She praised the facility as a reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to quality healthcare, particularly for women and children, and encouraged local communities to utilize and protect the hospital.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, commended the timely intervention, recognizing the First Lady’s advocacy for women and vulnerable groups. The centre, named the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Mother and Child Centre, features an operating theatre, ICU units, consultation rooms, a laboratory, and modern delivery equipment.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, emphasized that the centre is part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access at the grassroots level. She called for increased antenatal visits and child immunizations, in line with the 2024 Nigeria SDGs Progress Report. Orelope-Adefulire also announced a women’s empowerment programme to be launched in June in the Southeast.

The Imo State government provided the land for the project, underscoring the effective collaboration between federal and state governments in advancing SDG-aligned development.
