FG Targets Five Million Gas Cylinders by 2030 in Push for Cleaner Cooking Fuel

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving clean energy access by announcing plans to distribute five million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to households nationwide by 2030.

Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, made this known during the launch of the North West phase of the grassroots LPG Penetration Programme in Sokoto. The initiative, he said, is a crucial step in advancing the national agenda for cleaner, safer, and more sustainable domestic energy use.

“With support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our goal is to distribute five million LPG cylinders by 2030, converting one million households each year to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking methods,” the minister stated.

The grassroots LPG programme has already been rolled out across the South West, South South, North East, and the Federal Capital Territory, with Sokoto’s launch marking the latest regional phase in the nationwide plan.

Cleaner Cooking, Healthier Homes

Ekpo emphasized that the programme is more than just a gas distribution effort it’s a health, economic, and environmental initiative designed to reduce indoor air pollution, curb deforestation, and create opportunities across the LPG value chain.

“This programme isn’t just about gas it’s about health, opportunity, and environmental responsibility,” he said.

The initiative is also expected to empower women and youth through employment opportunities in cylinder manufacturing, distribution, and maintenance, while simultaneously supporting local industry and small businesses.

Collaboration and Community Support

Ekpo expressed appreciation to key stakeholders who have contributed to the success of the initiative, including the Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, and the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for their support and commitment to community welfare.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Decade of Gas Secretariat for their strategic coordination of the initiative and extended special thanks to BUA Group the lead sponsor of the LPG cylinder distribution programme.

“Their contribution is playing a crucial role in bringing LPG access to underserved communities and strengthening public-private collaboration,” the minister noted.
