Foreign trips take N6.14bn as presidency outlines travel costs for Tinubu, Shettima
The Federal Government has proposed a total of N7.01 billion for the travel expenses of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with foreign trips accounting for the bulk of the allocation.
Details from the budget proposal show that N6.14 billion has been earmarked specifically for the president’s international travels, while an additional N873.88 million is set aside for local trips.
The budget also outlines travel provisions for Vice-President Kashim Shettima, allocating N1.73 billion for his transportation and travel needs in 2026. This includes N417.48 million for domestic travel and N1.31 billion for foreign engagements.
The allocations come against the backdrop of cost-cutting measures announced by the presidency in previous years. In 2024, President Tinubu ordered a 60 per cent reduction in the number of officials accompanying him on both local and international trips, as part of efforts to curb government spending.
In the 2024 fiscal year, both the president and vice-president were projected to spend a combined N8 billion on travel-related expenses.
President Tinubu presented the N58.18 trillion 2026 federal budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 19, 2025, following its approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
The proposed budget is currently undergoing legislative scrutiny as lawmakers debate spending priorities amid ongoing economic reforms.
