FG Launches Tuition-Free Training Programme for Technical School Teachers

In a major boost to education reform and workforce development, the Federal Government has launched the 2025/2026 Technical Teachers Training Programme (TTTP) — a tuition-free Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) initiative aimed at enhancing the skills and teaching capacity of secondary school educators in technical and vocational fields.

Announced by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Department of Technology and Science Education, the one-year programme is designed to “re-energise” Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria. The initiative aligns with the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s industrial and skills-based economy.

According to a statement from the ministry, the TTTP will focus on equipping teachers with contemporary pedagogical tools and aligning their knowledge base with modern industry standards. The ministry emphasized that the initiative is targeted at current teachers of technical or vocational subjects in public secondary technical schools or colleges with at least five years left before retirement.

“This programme is part of our broader strategy to improve the quality of technical education across Nigeria,” the Ministry said. “We are laying the foundation for a workforce that can compete globally and respond to the demands of the 21st-century economy.”

Analysts say the TTTP could become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s education-to-industry pipeline, helping bridge the technical skills gap while enhancing employability among students. Compared to other African nations investing heavily in TVET systems, Nigeria’s move to professionalize its technical teaching workforce signals a strategic shift toward sustainable economic development.
