FG approves N151.9 billion for electric buses, tricycles, and charging infrastructure in North-East

The Federal Government has announced plans to launch mass electric vehicle transportation in North-East Nigeria, following the approval of N151.9 billion in contracts by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

These contracts will cover the supply of electric buses and tricycles, as well as the establishment of charging infrastructure in the region.

A statement released on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, via his official X (formerly Twitter) page, revealed the development.

“The Tinubu administration is set to roll out mass electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria, with the Federal Executive Council clearing the final hurdle to implementing the plan,” the statement said. “Last week, the Council approved contracts worth nearly $100 million, or N151.9 billion, for the supply of buses and tricycles, as well as the establishment of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.”

The project will be funded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency in the region.

Under the approved contracts, Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited will supply 10 electric buses (17-seaters) for N2.9 billion, with delivery expected within six months.
