Federal Government Closes Case in Terrorism Trial of IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu

In a major development in the high-profile trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal Government has officially closed its case in the terrorism and treason prosecution of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

Announcing the decision on Thursday, the lead government prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the prosecution had concluded its presentation after calling five witnesses, including a fifth witness identified only as “EEE” for security reasons.

The witness was cross-examined by Kanu’s legal team, led by senior counsel Onyechi Ikpeazu, in proceedings presided over by Justice James Omotosho.

Awomolo declared that the prosecution was “fully satisfied” with the evidence presented including broadcasts and public statements allegedly made by Kanu and that the case had met the threshold necessary to proceed under the law.

“My Lord, having presented sufficient material evidence before this Honourable Court, the prosecution now formally closes its case,” Awomolo stated.

In response, Kanu’s lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, revealed that the defence would be entering a no-case submission, challenging the sufficiency of the prosecution’s evidence. The motion will be formally filed in due course.

This move marks a critical turning point in a case that has drawn intense national and international scrutiny.

Kanu, a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics, has long argued that his prosecution is politically motivated, a narrative echoed by several international rights organizations.
