FCT Police Arrest Lawmaker for Assaulting Driver in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced the arrest of lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh for allegedly assaulting a cab driver in Abuja.

The spokesperson for the Abuja Command Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest, stating that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.

The incident came to light when the victim, Stephen Abuwatseya, reported the matter to the police. Preliminary investigations reveal that the altercation occurred while Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh. Disputes over the delivery method escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Abuwatseya claims he was assaulted.

The police expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for law enforcement, noting that after allegedly slapping the driver, he reportedly dismissed the authority of the Inspector General of Police by stating, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.” This remark raised alarm within the police command about the lawmaker’s attitude towards law enforcement officials.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

The police command emphasized its commitment to conducting an impartial inquiry and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal actions will be taken based on the findings.
