An early-morning explosion on Thursday, August 14, 2025, shook a Nigerian Army storage building at the Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, triggering a brief fire outbreak.
Army spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as “minor” and assuring the public that no lives were lost. While the building suffered significant structural damage, the blast was contained before it could spread to other areas.
“Specifically, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage facilities of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, leading to a limited fire outbreak,” Anele explained.
Swift action by troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the flames were quickly extinguished.
According to the statement, damage was restricted to the affected building and some stored materials. A detailed assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss.
The Army urged residents of Ilese and nearby communities to remain calm, adding that a joint investigation with relevant agencies has begun to uncover the cause of the blast and prevent future occurrences.
