Executive Order 9 Aims to Improve Transparency, Nigerian Government Confirms

Amid growing debate, the Federal Government says Executive Order 9 is meant to improve transparency and accountability in how public funds are managed.

The government explained that the directive was introduced to ensure that all revenues earned by the federation are properly paid into official government accounts, in line with constitutional provisions. Officials say the order focuses particularly on the oil and gas sector, requiring that earnings such as royalties, taxes and other payments be remitted directly into recognised public funds to prevent leakages.

The Budget Office noted that the measure does not create any new law but reinforces existing constitutional rules on how government revenue should be handled and monitored.

Authorities also dismissed claims that the order interferes with the powers of the National Assembly, stressing that it only supports the implementation of existing financial regulations.

The government added that improving revenue tracking and remittance would strengthen public finances, increase funds available for distribution, and support national economic stability.

Officials say any disputes over the order can be resolved through the courts, but insist the directive remains an important step towards improving fiscal discipline and accountability.
