Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has pledged to act on the recommendations of the committee that investigated the violent End Bad Governance protest on August 1, 2024, which resulted in 10 fatalities and over ₦11 billion in property damage.
Governor Yusuf made the promise during the 25th Kano State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, after receiving the committee’s report from its chairman, Justice Lawan Wada (rtd.).
The protest, which escalated into violence, led to the death of 10 individuals, left seven others severely injured, and caused extensive damage to both public and private properties across the state.
“This is a tragic loss for the people of Kano. The destruction of lives and properties is intolerable, and our administration will take all necessary actions to ensure justice is served,” Yusuf stated. He further assured that his government did not interfere in the committee’s six-month investigation, allowing the committee full independence to conduct its work.
“I have confidence in the integrity and professionalism of the committee members. They were selected based on merit, and I am confident that they have executed their responsibilities without bias,” the governor added.
Justice Wada, in his presentation of the report, noted that the committee had visited all affected areas and consulted with various stakeholders to gather a comprehensive account of the protest’s impact. “We engaged with victims, security agencies, and eyewitnesses to ensure a thorough report. The loss of lives and destruction recorded is unfortunate, and we have recommended measures to prevent future occurrences,” Wada explained.
The governor expressed gratitude to the committee for its efforts and assured the public that its recommendations would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. “The government will take decisive action to ensure such events do not happen again. Those responsible for sponsoring violence and destruction must face the consequences,” Yusuf asserted.
The release of the report and the government’s commitment to carrying out its recommendations signify an important step toward accountability and justice in Kano State.
