Emir of Gusau, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, Dies at 71, Governor Lawal Pays Tribute

The Emir of Gusau, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. The revered monarch died on Friday in Abuja, according to a statement from the Zamfara State Government.

His death was confirmed by Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who described the Emir’s passing as a profound loss to the state and the nation.

Governor Lawal, in an official tribute, expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the traditional ruler, whom he described as a pillar of wisdom and stability.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” the governor stated. “We have lost a peace-loving leader, a bridge-builder, and a mentor whose guidance was instrumental to our administration. Personally, I have lost a confidant and a father figure. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.”

Dr. Ibrahim Bello ascended the throne in March 2015 as the 16th Emir of Gusau, succeeding his late father. Over the course of his decade-long reign, he was widely respected for his dedication to peace, intercommunal dialogue, and cultural preservation in Zamfara State.

Known for his humility and deep engagement in grassroots development, the late Emir was also an influential figure in the council of traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria.

As the state and the wider region mourn his passing, tributes have poured in from across the country, honoring a monarch whose life was defined by service, dignity, and unwavering commitment to his people.

Funeral arrangements are expected to follow Islamic rites, with details to be announced by the Emirate Council.
