Former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending a night in custody.
Tambuwal was detained on Monday by the EFCC over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals totaling N189 billion. The anti-graft agency accused him of violating the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Although the EFCC has yet to make an official statement regarding Tambuwal’s release, the senator was seen at his Abuja residence on Tuesday, receiving visits from prominent political figures.
Meanwhile, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar condemned the detention, alleging it was politically motivated. In a post on X, Abubakar claimed the President Bola Tinubu administration is leveraging the EFCC to pressure opposition members into joining the ruling party.
Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, also criticized the detention, saying it exposed contradictions in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.
