EFCC Justifies VeryDarkMan’s Detention, Grants Bail, and Commits to Transparent Probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated its legal authority to detain Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), while investigations into serious financial crime allegations against him continue.

In an official statement, the Commission confirmed that Otse has been granted administrative bail and will be released once he meets the stipulated conditions.

“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission. The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard,” the agency stated.

EFCC emphasized that while the public interest in the case is acknowledged and appreciated, its work must proceed without undue speculation or interference. It noted that the charges against the social media activist will be disclosed upon the conclusion of investigations.

“He has been offered an administrative bail and would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions,” the Commission said. “The EFCC appreciates the interest of Nigerians in its operations. The passion, enthusiasm, and robust responses to its activities are welcome. However, unfounded insinuations about the Commission’s motives should cease.”

Reaffirming its commitment to impartiality and due process, the agency added, “The EFCC should be allowed to carry out its mandate without fear or favour. Once investigations are concluded, appropriate charges will be filed.”

Otse’s arrest has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for his release. High-profile figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi have also joined the growing chorus demanding transparency and justice in the matter.
