The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the West African region.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
The emergency declaration comes in response to a recent wave of coups and attempted mutinies destabilizing several countries in the sub-region.
Addressing the council, Touray emphasized that these developments underscore the urgent need for deep reflection on the future of democracy in West Africa and renewed investment in the region’s security architecture.
According to him, the current challenges highlight the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
