Data Demand Drives Nigeria’s Mobile Market to 179 Million Connections – NCC

Mobile subscriptions in Nigeria rose to 179.64 million by December 2025, highlighting growing digital connectivity and the expanding role of mobile networks in the country’s economy, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Active subscriptions increased from 177.43 million in November, pushing the country’s teledensity, the number of active telephone connections per 100 people, to 82.87%. Teledensity is a key measure of telecom reach, infrastructure development and economic activity, while also highlighting differences in access between urban and rural areas.

MTN Nigeria maintained its lead with 93 million subscribers, accounting for 51.87% of the market. In terms of technology adoption, 4G networks dominated at 52.95%, followed by 2G at 37.37%, 3G at 5.91%, and 5G at 3.77%, reflecting gradual but steady uptake of next-generation mobile technology.

Data usage continued to surge, surpassing 13.2 million terabytes in 2025, driven by streaming, social media, e-commerce, and other digital services. Broadband adoption also strengthened, with internet subscriptions reaching 112.67 million in December and broadband penetration climbing to 51.97%, up from 50.58% in November.
