Cyriel Dessers: “I See Myself as a Full-Blooded Nigerian”

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has reaffirmed his strong connection to Nigeria, describing himself as a “full-blooded Nigerian” despite being born in Belgium.

The Rangers forward made the declaration while expressing his excitement about returning to the national team, following his impressive performance in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup semi-final at the Gtech Community Stadium in London. Dessers opened the scoring for Nigeria in the match, marking another proud moment in his international career.

Reflecting on his heritage, Dessers said his identity is never in doubt. “When you look in the mirror, you see Nigeria,” he told the Super Eagles media team. “At the moment I got the call, I didn’t have to think about it for long. When you get the call, you want to go—I went.”

Dessers, who made his senior debut for Nigeria in October 2020 and is eligible to represent the country through his Nigerian mother, emphasized his commitment to the national team and his desire to help the West African giants achieve more success.

The striker also expressed hope of representing Nigeria at major international tournaments in the future, adding that it remains a key ambition in his footballing journey.
