China Declares It’s on the “Right Side of History” in Ongoing Trade War with U.S.

A senior Chinese economic official asserted on Monday that Beijing is on the “right side of history” in its ongoing trade conflict with the United States.

Since President Donald Trump resumed office in January, the US has imposed 10% tariffs on most global trading partners, including a 145% levy on many Chinese goods. In retaliation, China has introduced its own 125% tariffs on US imports.

Speaking at a news conference in Beijing, senior economic planner Zhao Chenxin condemned Washington’s “unilateralism and bullying,” stating that the US was “isolating itself” with its policies. Zhao emphasized that global cooperation, not confrontation, was the path to securing the future.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Trump’s tariff strategy, calling it an effort to create “strategic uncertainty” and strengthen America’s position.

Despite the mounting pressures on its economy, which has been significantly impacted by the tariffs, China has vowed to continue the trade war “to the end” and rejected claims of negotiations with the US.

Yu Jiadong of China’s labour ministry acknowledged the strain on export-oriented companies, noting that the tariffs have created challenges for production and jobs.
