Chad Imposes Visa Ban on U.S. Citizens in Retaliation for Trump-Era Travel Restrictions

In a bold move underscoring growing tensions over U.S. travel restrictions, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has ordered an immediate suspension of visa issuance to American nationals, citing reciprocity for a U.S. travel ban affecting his country.

The retaliatory order, announced Thursday via a statement on the president’s official Facebook page, comes in response to a Trump-era policy that listed Chad among 12 countries subject to heightened travel restrictions on national security grounds.

“I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principle of reciprocity and suspend visas for U.S. citizens,” President Itno said. “Chad may not have jets or billions to offer, but it has dignity and pride.”

The symbolic gesture underscores mounting frustration in Africa, the continent hardest hit by the now-notorious travel ban first introduced in 2017. Seven African countries including Chad, Libya, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Nigeria, and Equatorial Guinea were on the restricted list.

The ban, though later revised, had wide-reaching implications for travel, migration, and diplomatic ties. Affected nations also included Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, and Yemen, along with additional visa restrictions placed on countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Sierra Leone under national security justifications.

While the policy was signed under the Trump administration, it remains politically sensitive in U.S. foreign relations, particularly with African nations that viewed the ban as discriminatory.

The African Union (AU) has voiced concern, urging Washington to adopt a more collaborative and transparent approach with the nations involved. “These measures risk straining strategic partnerships and undermining long-standing diplomatic ties,” the AU said in a statement.

President Itno’s visa ban is largely symbolic, few Americans travel to Chad annually, but analysts say it reflects growing African assertiveness in the global diplomatic space.

Whether the Biden administration will respond to the Chadian president’s move remains to be seen. The U.S. State Department has yet to comment.
