The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Christopher Musa, has responded to concerns surrounding the Nigerian military’s participation in the recent Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, following the denial of visas to him and other senior military officers.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday while receiving the Nigerian contingent that won medals at the event, Musa clarified that all required procedures for the visa application were followed. He emphasized that the Nigerian delegation had been officially invited to the games and had complied with all necessary protocols.
Addressing critics who raised questions about the situation, Musa said, “On the issue of the denial of the visa, we must not travel abroad. Nigeria is good enough for all of us.” He further explained that the Nigerian military does not take shortcuts and that both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Adviser (NSA) were informed about the planned trip.
Despite the procedural compliance, Musa noted that several members of the team, including the team captain, medical doctor, and physiotherapist, were denied visas. “Most of the teams were not given visas, and the question is why?” Musa asked, adding that the federal government is looking into the matter.
The CDS stressed that Nigerians deserve respect on the global stage and should not tolerate any form of disrespect. He also congratulated the Nigerian participants for their exemplary performances at the games, saying, “You are the true embodiment of the Invictus spirit unconquered, unbroken, and unstoppable.”
