CBN Urges Nigerians to Protect Banking Details as Global Money Week 2026 Begins

Apex bank warns customers never to share PINs or passwords amid rising cases of fraud and impersonation scams…..

The Central Bank of Nigeria has urged bank customers across the country to protect their financial information by refusing to share sensitive banking details with anyone, including individuals claiming to represent their banks.

The warning was issued as part of activities marking Global Money Week 2026, an international campaign focused on promoting financial literacy and encouraging safer money management practices.

In a message shared on its official X account, the apex bank reminded Nigerians that personal banking credentials such as PINs, passwords, and other confidential details should always remain private.

“Protect your money by protecting your information,” the bank stated. “As we mark Global Money Week 2026, remember: your PINs, passwords, and banking details should never be shared with anyone, not even someone claiming to be from your bank. Stay alert. Stay safe.”

The advisory comes at a time when financial fraud and digital scams are becoming increasingly common, with criminals often impersonating bank officials to deceive unsuspecting customers.

Fraudsters frequently contact victims through phone calls, text messages, or emails, posing as representatives of financial institutions and requesting sensitive information under various pretexts.

Once such details are disclosed, scammers can gain access to victims’ accounts and carry out unauthorised transactions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria emphasised that legitimate banks and financial institutions do not request confidential banking information from customers through unsolicited calls or messages.

The campaign tied to Global Money Week 2026 aims to educate the public about financial responsibility, encourage better money management, and strengthen consumer awareness around financial safety.

The annual initiative is observed worldwide and includes outreach programmes, public awareness campaigns, and educational activities designed to help individuals make informed financial decisions while protecting themselves from fraud.
