Cardinals Enter Sacred Conclave to Elect New Pope

In an extraordinary moment of global significance, 133 cardinal electors from 70 nations entered the hallowed halls of the Sistine Chapel on May 7, 2025, beginning the secretive and sacred process of selecting the 267th pope.

The conclave began with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

Subsequently, the cardinals proceeded to the Sistine Chapel, where they will remain sequestered until a new pope is elected. Adhering to strict protocols, the cardinals take oaths of secrecy, and the chapel is secured with measures such as electronic sweeps and signal jamming to prevent external communication.

The election process requires a two-thirds majority, equating to at least 89 votes, to elect a new pope. Voting sessions occur twice daily, with ballots burned after each session.

The resulting smoke signals the outcome: black smoke indicates no decision, while white smoke and ringing bells announce the election of a new pope.

Among the prominent candidates are Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, known for his diplomatic acumen; Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, often referred to as “the Asian Francis”; and Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea, representing a more conservative viewpoint. The conclave reflects the Church’s global diversity, with significant representation from Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The duration of the conclave is uncertain, but recent history suggests a resolution within a few days. Observers anticipate that the new pope will address pressing issues such as Church unity, clerical reforms, and the role of the Church in a rapidly changing world.
