Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has identified his top five Nigerian footballing heroes during a wide-ranging conversation about his heritage and professional journey. The Birmingham City right-back sat down with Oma Sports TV to reflect on the players who shaped his passion for the sport, selecting a quintet of legendary figures that includes Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and the late Rashidi Yekini. His choices highlight a deep appreciation for the technical skill, leadership, and historical impact of Nigeria’s greatest sporting icons.
Osayi-Samuel, who recently joined Birmingham City after a successful stint in the Turkish Süper Lig, drew specific parallels between his own career path and those of his idols. He noted the enduring legacy of Austin Jay-Jay Okocha at his former club, Fenerbahçe, where the playmaker remains a revered figure decades after his departure. The defender also expressed significant admiration for Nwankwo Kanu’s trophy-laden years in the Premier League, particularly his influential spells with North London side Arsenal and Portsmouth.
“I will say Okocha. He still has a picture frame display in the Fenerbahçe training up still today; they love him there, he is like a legend for them. Kanu, especially when he was at Arsenal and Portsmouth. He is really good,” Osayi-Samuel said. “Yobo. His picture is also at the Fernabahce training ground. I look up to him. I have spoken to him before, and he gave me advice, very supportive. Enyeama. I used to watch him when I was younger. And Yekini. I didn’t really watch him, but I remember my dad used to mention him, that he was one of the greatest players who had played for Nigeria.”
The inclusion of Joseph Yobo carries personal weight for Osayi-Samuel, as the former national team captain also achieved legendary status in Istanbul. Osayi-Samuel credits Yobo with providing direct mentorship and guidance, helping him navigate the complexities of professional football. He further acknowledged the childhood influence of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and the storied reputation of Rashidi Yekini, whose exploits for the Super Eagles were a constant topic of conversation in the Osayi-Samuel household.
Now a central figure in the current Super Eagles defensive line, Osayi-Samuel seeks to emulate the consistency and national pride demonstrated by these five predecessors. His move to English football represents a strategic step to remain in the spotlight ahead of upcoming international commitments. By honoring the past, the 28-year-old reinforces his commitment to the green-and-white jersey as he helps lead the next generation of Nigerian talent toward future honors on the global stage.
