Brazil’s Vice President Arrives in Nigeria for Landmark Strategic Dialogue Summit

In a major step toward strengthening South-South cooperation, Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, and his wife, Maria Alckmin, touched down in Abuja on Tuesday to participate in the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism—a high-level bilateral forum aimed at deepening ties across critical sectors.

The Brazilian delegation was welcomed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by top Nigerian officials, including the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha; and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

Speaking at a brief reception at the airport, Hadejia described the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda.” He emphasised the strategic importance of deepening ties with Brazil.

“This dialogue reflects our resolve to pursue South-South partnerships that produce real, measurable benefits,” Hadejia said. “Brazil’s expertise in agribusiness, clean energy, and industrial policy dovetails seamlessly with President Tinubu’s transformation agenda.”

Over the course of the three-day summit, Nigeria and Brazil are expected to formalize more than 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across a broad spectrum of strategic areas. These include defence collaboration, agricultural technology transfer, renewable energy cooperation, and cultural diplomacy.

The high-level dialogue is also seen as a crucial component of Nigeria’s broader efforts to diversify international partnerships beyond traditional Western alliances and foster more balanced, mutually beneficial global relationships.
