Borno Governor Announces 90% Cut in Palliatives, Distributes Aid to Flood Victims

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced a drastic 90% reduction in the distribution of palliatives previously provided to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency. This decision follows his distribution of food aid, including rice and grains, to 250,000 flood victims across the 27 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the distribution event on Wednesday, Governor Zulum explained that the palliatives were aimed at alleviating the hardships caused by the devastating floods of the previous year, which heavily impacted businesses and the livelihoods of many residents. He noted that while 100,000 people in the Maiduguri metropolis and surrounding areas would benefit from the aid, over 150,000 others would receive food assistance from the 25 local government councils across the state.

“We are all aware that our beloved state has yet to fully recover from the devastating flood disaster that recently affected Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities. Many families are still counting their losses,” Zulum said. “I am deeply moved by the pain and hardship this disaster has caused, particularly for the most vulnerable among us, those who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones.”

The governor also highlighted that the distribution of food was in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, marking the official launch of the Ramadan food distribution program. The program is aimed at assisting the poorest members of the community, with 100,000 beneficiaries from Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, while another 6,000 individuals from each of the other 26 local government areas will also receive food assistance.

Addressing the 90% cut in palliative distribution, Governor Zulum explained that the decision was influenced by the bumper harvest seen in various communities across the state. He stressed the importance of agriculture as not only a means of survival but also a tool for economic empowerment. As a result, he said the state government would focus on creating an environment that supports youth and entrepreneurs in agribusiness.

The governor also emphasized that this shift towards agriculture would reduce government spending on palliatives and encourage self-sufficiency in the long run. “We will continue to invest in agricultural inputs, infrastructure, and support programs that will enhance the sector and drive sustainable economic growth,” he stated.

Governor Zulum concluded by thanking the Federal Government, sister states, and other organizations for their support during these challenging times. “Their solidarity, generosity, and commitment to our people’s well-being have been a source of great encouragement,” he added.
