Benue Killings: Security Operatives Announce Arrest Of Suspects

Nigerian security forces have confirmed the arrest of several suspects in connection with the horrifying massacre in Yelewata, Benue State. The operation, conducted jointly by police and military units, follows the deaths of over 150 people in a series of attacks on sleeping villagers

Local authorities report that the suspects were apprehended in coordinated raids across multiple hideouts. Details are still emerging, but preliminary intelligence suggests their involvement in the June 13–14 assaults, which left homes and farms torched and families devastated.

The late-night raid was carried out with heavy backing from military intelligence and tracking units. The arrests come just days after the Niger Delta Force intercepted attempted arms shipments reportedly linked to the same group—a significant move toward restoring security in the region .

Victim families are demanding swift prosecution and justice. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana criticized authorities for past inconsistencies: “Suspects are arrested but not prosecuted,” he said, urging full accountability this time .

Governor Hyacinth Alia has pledged support to security agencies and families affected by the attack. Meanwhile, peace dialogues involving local herders and farmers are being organized to tackle the underlying causes of recurring violence in central Nigeria.
