Former South Africa forward Benni McCarthy has spoken candidly about the evolving dynamic between Nigeria and South Africa, expressing concern over what he describes as an unnecessary rise in rivalry between the two footballing nations.
During a media interaction, McCarthy noted that both countries once shared a bond marked by mutual support and unity, a contrast to the increasingly tense atmosphere surrounding recent fixtures — including their 1-1 draw in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“I don’t know what’s this unwanted rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria. We used to be very close. We used to be supportive,” McCarthy said.
He stressed that his loyalty to South Africa does not diminish his broader support for the African continent, adding that unity should transcend competitive matches.
“For me, I support everything Africa. I’m South African but if I see anything African, I support because it’s my continent. I am proud of that.
“I understand when we play against each other, when there is a rivalry on the day of the match, but after the game we embrace each other because we’re Africans.”
McCarthy’s remarks come amid heightened fan debates, social media clashes, and nationalistic tensions that have grown around recent Nigeria–South Africa encounters in major competitions.
