The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi State has announced the launch of an investigation into the death of a woman who allegedly died due to staff negligence.
The hospital’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Usman Koli, disclosed this in a statement posted Tuesday on his official Facebook handle, in response to an earlier post by one Ibrahim Katagum. Katagum had accused staff at the hospital’s Renal Centre of abandoning his mother while she was undergoing dialysis, leading to her untimely death.
Narrating the incident in a Hausa-language post, Katagum alleged, “I found this nurse outside talking to other people, while she had tied our mother to the blood filter. At that moment, the tube that was carrying the blood back and forth through her abdomen had come loose, and all her blood had spilt on the floor while she was outside.”
He further claimed that the negligence of the nurses led directly to his mother’s death, saying, “Even the doctors who examined her were surprised she died at that time, based on how they had left her and what they later found.”
In response, Koli expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and assured the public that the hospital had already begun a comprehensive internal investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
“We are committed to getting to the root of the matter and will not hesitate to take all necessary and appropriate actions to address any identified lapses and prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
Koli also urged the public to use official complaint channels provided by the hospital for reporting incidents, rather than turning to social media, which he said may not always offer the clarity or sensitivity such situations require.
