Gunmen have reportedly killed at least 10 residents across five communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, marking another devastating attack on Wednesday afternoon. The assailants targeted the villages of Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai, leaving destruction in their wake as several homes were burned to the ground.
This violent assault comes just a week after a deadly attack on Ruwi community in the same LGA, where gunmen killed at least 12 mourners gathered at a home to pay respects to a deceased loved one.
Over the past week, at least 22 residents have been killed in the series of attacks across Bokkos, underscoring the ongoing threat to local communities. In a statement released on Thursday, Farmasum Fuddang, chairman of the Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC), condemned the violence, stating that the attackers’ goal appears to be the forcible seizure of land and the imposition of a caliphate on the region.
Fuddang also emphasized the urgency of self-defense, suggesting that residents should be armed with non-prohibited weapons to delay attackers until help can arrive. He described the attackers as “marauding terrorists” engaging in a campaign of ethnic and religious cleansing.
Survivors reported that the assailants, speaking the Fulani dialect, launched their attack around noon on April 2, starting in Mangor Tamiso and moving through Daffo, Manguna (Tagai), and other villages, including Hurti and Tadai. The attacks were carried out with chilling efficiency in broad daylight.
Fuddang’s statement also called on emergency agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Nigerian Red Cross, to provide immediate relief to the displaced and the injured.
The violence in Bokkos continues to devastate local communities, leaving many in fear and uncertainty. With the government’s inability to protect every community, the call for residents to take up arms for self-defense grows louder, signaling an escalating crisis in the region.
