Atiku Defends Peter Obi, Says Threat to One Is a Threat to All

Former VP reacts to Governor Okpebholo’s warning, insists political intimidation has no place in democracy.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned recent remarks directed at Peter Obi, warning that any threat against the former presidential candidate should be considered a threat to all opposition voices.

In a brief statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday afternoon, Atiku wrote:

“Let it be known that a threat against Peter Obi or any of us is a threat against ALL of us! – AA”

His statement comes in response to comments made by Senator Monday Okpebholo, the newly sworn-in governor of Edo State, who warned Peter Obi not to visit the state without first obtaining security clearance.

Governor Okpebholo alleged that Obi’s previous visit to the state, during which he donated N15 million to a nursing school, coincided with civil unrest in Benin City that reportedly led to loss of lives. The governor linked the incident to the political tension surrounding Obi’s presence.

The remarks have triggered widespread backlash, with critics accusing the governor of attempting to intimidate political figures and stifle democratic engagement.

Atiku’s response underscores rising concern among opposition leaders over what they describe as a growing trend of political intolerance and threats in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Neither Peter Obi nor his spokesperson had issued an official response at the time of filing this report.
